The ocean is a cruel and unforgiving environment. The quality of the diesel that powers your vessel could literally be the difference between life and death. Whether your marine diesel is sourced from a marina or elsewhere it is crucial that you can depend on its excellent condition. Can you be confident that the diesel in the marina tanks is of the required standard? Fuel Clean NZ eliminates that concern. Our comprehensive diesel quality checking and maintenance programmes will ensure that you put out to sea every time, confident that your diesel will not let you down.

DON’T LEAVE IT TO CHANCE – GET YOUR DIESEL CHECKED BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT ON THE WATER

What is Fuel Contamination?

In most countries diesel contains 93% petrochemical diesel and 7% biodiesel. The biodiesel blend reduces the environmental impact of burning fuel. However, biodiesel contains water. It’s present when the fuel’s manufactured. Biodiesels attract more water while they’re stored.

Water is the enemy of clean fuel:

  • water is a contaminant in its own right.
  • emulsified and free water encourages microbial growth
  • water accelerates contamination from solids like rust.

Without proper maintenance diesel will degrade. It’s inevitable.

Detecting Fuel Contamination

Research shows 95% of tanks are contaminated

Understanding the condition of your fuel is the first step to ensuring it can power your diesel-engined generators and equipment reliably.

Our testing equipment and services deliver an accurate analysis of your stored diesel. We test your fuel for water and particulate contact as well as fuel density, providing you with precise samples quickly and efficiently.

Our goal is to ensure your fuel exceeds the ISO Standard during long-term storage.

Protect your Fuel Quality

Fuel polishing is vital for any diesel-powered equipment. It removes a critical point of failure: fuel contamination. Modern engines and fuel systems need clean fuel to run reliably. If left untreated diesel is under constant attack from water, microbial growth (aka “diesel bug”) and solid particulates.

By removing water, diesel bug and particulate contaminants from your stored diesel, your generators, pumps and plant keep running as long as you need them. It’s the protection your fuel system needs.

Preventative measures are more cost effective than corrective measures.

How it works

We use high flow-rate systems to generate enough turbulence within the tank. Directional lances are used to move the fuel around the tank, disrupting any pockets of contamination and forcing them into our cleaning systems. Our equipment is mobile so we can work on any tank in any location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is microbial growth?

Microbial growth, also known as “Diesel Bug” it is not a single type of organism. There are thousands of different types of bacteria, mould and yeast found inhabiting fuel systems.

What is diesel fuel polishing?

Diesel fuel polishing is the maintenance process that stops water and contaminants infecting fuel while it’s held in storage tanks. It increases generator reliability and longevity.

Why test your diesel fuel?

Today’s biodiesel is less stable than petrochemical diesel and is more prone to oxidation. It is also more hygroscopic and will absorb more moisture from the atmosphere. As ambient temperatures change this moisture condenses out of the fuel to form free water at the bottom of the fuel storage tank. This is the breeding ground for the diesel bug.

What happens if I fill my boat up with Petrol?

Make sure you’ve got the Coast Guard’s number so you can get towed back in! Failing that give us a call before you set out to put a maintenance plan in place.

How do you stop diesel bug growing?

Prevention is always best. The key to maintaining fuel quality is good housekeeping. We recommend following a comprehensive fuel conditioning programme to ensure that your diesel-powered equipment runs reliably and economically.

Why are we only hearing about diesel bug now?

When we used petrochemical diesel we had few problems with the diesel bug. It thrives where it finds both water and diesel; petrochemical diesel does not attract water the way biodiesel does.

How does fuel become contaminated?

In most countries diesel contains 93% petrochemical diesel and 7% biodiesel. The biodiesel blend reduces the environmental impact of burning fuel. However, biodiesel contains water. It’s present when the fuel’s manufactured and biodiesels attract more water while they’re stored.

Maintaining your diesel has never been easier

Mike and his high-tech gear to the rescue! We honestly had no idea how badly the contaminated fuel was degrading our equipment until we were shown the before and after qualities. Fuel Clean then put a maintenance plan in place and we haven't looked back.

Fuel Clean turned up exactly when they said they would and delivered on their promise to get the diesel in our tanks to a standard better than when we purchased it. The whole process took far less time than we were expecting and we now have a strategy in place to safeguard against bad diesel wrecking our gear and voiding our warranties.

I was a bit dubious when Rob and Mike were referred to me when I was having repeated problems with my boat engine. But the guys turned up, strapped on their fancy gizmos and ran the diesel in the tank through the polishing process. The difference in clarity and purity was immediately visible, even to me - and the engine now runs like a dream. I'd highly recommend Fuel Clean - for a boatie like me they could be a life saver.
