Fuel Clean NZ removes diesel bug, water and sediment from boat fuel tanks and backup generator tanks across Auckland, onsite and without dumping your fuel. We test at three depths, polish your diesel back to clean and keep it that way with a maintenance plan.
We come to your berth, hardstand, building or site, from the Hibiscus Coast to Manukau.
Key Facts
- Mobile fuel polishing at your marina berth, hardstand or plant room
- Every tank sampled at the top, middle and bottom
- Diesel cleaned and returned to the tank, nothing dumped
- Boats, commercial vessels, standby generators, plant and fleet tanks
- Maintenance plans and remote fuel monitoring for critical sites

Marine fuel polishing and diesel bug removal
A boat is the harshest place to store diesel. Salt air is humid, tanks breathe through vents close to the water, and many Auckland boats sit for weeks with half-full tanks. Condensation builds up, water settles at the bottom and diesel bug grows where water and fuel meet.
Then you head out into a chop. The motion lifts the sludge off the bottom of the tank and into your filters, which is why diesel bug so often strikes in rough water, crossing a bar or coming back into a marina: exactly when you need the engine.
Signs of diesel bug in your boat
- Primary filters (Racor or similar) blocking quickly, or black slime in the bowl
- The engine surging, losing revs or stopping in a sea
- Dark or cloudy fuel, or water in the filter bowl
- A sour smell from the tank or filler
How we polish boat fuel
- Test samples from the top, middle and bottom of each tank, so water and sludge can’t hide.
- Polish the fuel through our filters and coalescer, using directional lances to lift sediment off the tank floor, and return it clean.
- Advise on vents, fillers, filters and access, including whether your tank needs an inspection port for future cleaning.
- Maintain with a test schedule that suits how often you use the boat.
We work with launches, yachts, diesel trailer boats, charter and dive operators, fishing vessels, ferries and work boats.
Get your fuel checked before summer
Spring is when winter’s condensation comes back to bite. If your boat has sat over the cooler months, have the fuel tested before Labour Weekend, the Christmas break or any offshore passage. It’s a far cheaper fix at the berth than a tow in from the Hauraki Gulf.
Backup generator fuel polishing
In 1998 the Auckland CBD lost mains power for around five weeks. Businesses that had kept their generator fuel in good condition got going again; others found their generators failing once old diesel reached the injectors. Storm and flood outages since have taught the same lesson.
Standby generator diesel can sit for years without being used, and it degrades the whole time. We look after generator fuel for:
- Hospitals, medical centres and aged care
- Data centres and telecommunications sites
- Apartment and commercial buildings with life-safety generators
- Water, wastewater and council infrastructure
- Cool stores, food production and distribution centres
- Schools, hotels and event venues
We test your generator diesel, polish it back to clean, and set up scheduled maintenance with a written report for your facilities records. For critical sites, remote monitoring shows fuel condition without anyone going into the plant room.
Other diesel we look after in Auckland
- Construction plant and site fuel tanks
- Transport and bus depot tanks
- Port, logistics and materials-handling equipment
- Bulk diesel storage at commercial and industrial sites
Areas we cover
Auckland CBD and the Viaduct, Westhaven, North Shore and Bayswater, Hobsonville and West Auckland, East Auckland including Half Moon Bay and Pine Harbour, Gulf Harbour and the Hibiscus Coast, South Auckland and Manukau, and the wider Auckland region.
FAQs
How do I get rid of diesel bug in my boat?
The reliable fix is fuel polishing: the diesel is pumped out of the tank, run through filters and a water separator to remove the bug, sludge and water, and returned clean. Regular testing and a biocide afterwards stop it coming back.
Can you polish fuel while the boat is in the water?
Yes. Our equipment is mobile and works at the berth or on the hardstand, provided the marina allows contractor work.
Does diesel bug come from marina fuel?
It can arrive with fuel, but most cases start in your own tank, from condensation and water getting in through vents and fillers. That’s why boats that sit unused are most at risk.
Is a diesel bug additive enough?
A biocide kills the bug, but the dead sludge and water stay in the tank and keep blocking filters. Polishing removes them. Additives work best on a clean tank.
How often should backup generator diesel be tested?
At least once a year, and every six months for hospitals, data centres and other critical sites.
What affects the cost of fuel polishing?
Tank size, how contaminated the fuel is, access to the tank and how many tanks are on site. A test first tells you exactly what’s needed.
